Jack Reacher gets a visit with a request for help from his deceased brother’s ex-girlfriend, who works for the Secret Service in the Vice President-Elect’s personal detail. And, being Jack Reacher, he can’t resist helping–until it turns into something more personal. 

What I Liked: It’s pretty fast-paced, although occasionally some of the description dragged. I was able to read it in a few days. It was Jack Reacher at his best: confident but not cocky; accurate in his work and in what he’s doing, but not personally flawless. He really is a great character to love, care about, and root for.

The story itself is interesting, if you like military thrillers with a good dose of mystery. The end was satisfying, and it was good. Child does a good job of planting clues; the result is very good pay-offs. I will definitely read the next one. 

What I Didn’t Like: ECHOS! Every two or three pages I could count on the same darned sentence or a slight variation of it:

“Reacher said nothing…”

“He said nothing… “

“Reacher said nothing (again!)…”

“Stuyvesant said nothing…”

“Reacher said nothing…”

GOOD GRIEF! Echoooo… Echooo… Echoooo…. 

If Reacher said nothing, there’s no need to tell us. Lack of dialogue on his part will fill us in on his silence. 

Character that I Liked: Neagley.

Character that I Found Annoying: Froelich. 

Language: Occasional and enough for texture, but nothing that will take you out of the story. 

Sex: Nothing graphic or explicit. In fact, I think it’s only mentioned in passing a couple of times.
